Liverpool came out the traps the faster of the two teams in a first-half they dominated throughout.

The Reds came the closest to breaking the deadlock when Jonjo Shelvey hit the top of the post on the 34th minute, with a fine strike from a tight angle.

It was not long before Liverpool got on the scoresheet though after intense pressure, when Luis Suarez fired a free-kick which again hit the woodwork, before Glen Johnson collected the rebound and drew the ball back for Agger who headed it home on 43 minutes.

Liverpool pushed in the second-half for a goal to put the game to bed but a resilient Southampton outfit would not go down easily.

Jose Enrique had a great chance to double their lead and Suarez was causing all sorts of problems in the second-half and could have bagged himself a couple.

The Uruguayan almost put the game to bed in the 88th minute but his left-footed effort was dragged just wide of the upright.

Southampton offered very little in the way off attack and it was the Reds who claimed all three points at Anfield.
