It is a busy fixture list for all clubs at present, but especially those who must juggle domestic and European football.

And although Ferguson would ideally like to win in style, he says the focus at present is purely on picking up points.

"It is the time of the year when you grind results out," he said. "The internationals are out of the way and we play our last group game in the Champions League next Wednesday, which gives us further opportunity to concentrate on the league. It is a big moment for us."

Their performance in the 1-0 victory over West Ham on Wednesday was a perfect example of winning at all costs. It was not pretty and the Red Devils had to endure some nervy moments before coming away with the three points.

Central midfielder Michael Carrick, however, is calling for a return to the days when United used to comprehensively outplay teams.

"It was a long way from a classic," said Michael Carrick. "The biggest plus was the clean sheet, which at least gives us something to build on.

"We had a spell a few years ago when we really started games well and could have killed teams off.

"We want to try and get back to something near that because Old Trafford is a difficult place to come when you go a goal down."

Ferguson's side clash with Reading at the Madejski stadium on Saturday.
