The Blues dropped even further behind in the Premier League title race as they were held at home against Fulham this week, with the west London giants now seven points behind leaders Manchester United.

The result followed on from last weekend's 0-0 draw against Manchester City, but Benitez, who succeeded the sacked Roberto Di Matteo last week, is confident the side are improving.

He said: "We have had maybe five training sessions so far; it is too early but for me we are watching things that are positive."

When asked whether he thought Chelsea were still capable of challenging for the league crown this season, the Spaniard responded: "Why can't we? It's still a long way to go. We have to keep going. We'll have chances.

"Remember, last season when City were ahead and it was 'easy'. Then they needed to win their last game. It's a long, long competition."
