Bale: Bagged Spurs' second

Tottenham Hotspur saw out a well deserved 2-1 victory against a Liverpool side that left it too late to mount their recovery from a poor start.

The home side came flying out the traps straight from the kick-off, Gareth Bale forcing Pepe Reina to make an instinctive save from a looping free kick before sending an effort just inches wide of the post after pouncing on a loose ball in midfield from Steven Gerrard.

Bale didn't have to wait long after those two attempts to make a decisive impact, though, the Welshman putting the ball on a plate for Aaron Lennon to stab the ball home from two yards out after just seven minutes.

Luis Suarez tried almost single-handedly to pull Liverpool back into the game shortly after with a couple of half-chances, but for too much of the match he cut an isolated figure in the final third, devoid of service from his teammates.

Jordan Henderson highlighted this lack of quality by missing an open goal after Hugo Lloris rushed off his line, leaving the goal gaping.

It got worse for the Reds after 16 minutes, Bale turning from provider to goalscorer with a beauty of a free kick. The ball may have taken a slight deflection on its way in, but Reina stood no chance of making a save.

Liverpool's best chance of the half fell, predictably, to Suarez, but his attempt at nudging the ball over the line was thwarted by Kyle Walker hacking it clear.

Liverpool mounted a spirited attempted comeback as the second half got underway, and a lifeline for them came in the form of an extraordinary own goal.

Gerrard headed the ball goalwards only to find Lennon on the line. The Spurs man kicked the ball onto Bale's head and back over the line to hand the Welshman an unfortunate own goal to add to his one at the right end.

Suarez sent a volleyed effort just over the bar in what was Liverpool's best chance of the final 15 minutes to pull level, but Spurs clung on to deservedly pick up all three points in an entertaining midweek fixture.
