In truth, chances were few and far between at the Britannia Stadium, with both goalkeepers rarely being tested. Shots in the first half were limited to long range efforts but Walters' inability to connect to the ball properly did see his effort cannon off the post in the 16th minute.

The breakthrough looked like it would never come in the first 45 minutes, which made it even more surprising when it did two minutes after the restart.

Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, who had had an outstanding first half, parried Demba Ba's ferocious shot from distance. Papiss Cisse was most alert to the loose ball, blasting it into the back of the net off the post.

The Potters toiled with little cutting edge until an inspired substitution changed the course of the game. Jerome's introduction in the 68th minute enlivened the home side and they equalised 13 minutes later when his cross was delicately flicked over Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul by Walters.

This gave the home side renewed belief and they secured the winner four minutes later, with Jerome becoming the scorer, beating Krul after latching onto a knockdown from Kenwyne Jones.

Stoke probably just about edged it in terms of chances and possession but Newcastle boss Alan Pardew will be unhappy at surrendering a lead in the final stages of the game, which condemned his side to a fourth straight league defeat.
