Rafa Benitez opted to drop Juan Mata and John Obi Mikel, with Oriol Romeu and Ryan Bertrand handed starts, while the Cottagers made three changes from the side beaten 1-0 at Stoke City last time out.

The game got off to a slow start and never really got going before the interval, with the home side having the better of the possession but being unable to worry the visiting defence too much.

The first effort on target came from Fernando Torres, with his effort on the half-hour mark weak and straight at Mark Schwarzer, while at the other end Hugo Rodallega's drive into the midriff of Petr Cech was the closest that the Cottagers came.

Ten minutes into the second half Giorgios Karagounis lifted a long ball through to John Arne Riise, but he mis-hit his shot when clean through on the left.

Fifteen minutes from time Riise was again the danger has blasted a shot goalwards from the left edge of the area, forcing Cech into a smart low save at his near post.

Fernando Torres finally came to life as the clock ticked on and ten minutes from time his shot forced Aaron Hughes into a superb clearance from close to his own goal-line.

Chelsea poured forward in the final few minutes, but Fulham held firm and were more than good value for their point.
