The talismanic defender injured his calf in Saturday's 0-0 draw with Arsenal and was replaced early in the second half.

It would be a big blow for the Midlands outfit as the Holland international has been their standout performer this season.

Villa manager Paul Lambert is likely to call on Matt Lowton to fill the void left by Vlaar with Eric Lichaj moving to the right-back position.

Meanwhile, Reading - who are one point and one place behind Villa in the league standings, albeit having played a game less - will be without midfielder Jimmy Kebe for the encounter.

Danny Guthrie, Jem Karacan and Alex McCarthy remain long-term casualties.

Royals boss Brian McDermott will have penned this match into his diary as a must-win tie.

The Berkshire club have the opportunity to leapfrog both Villa and Sunderland out of the drop-zone but witt Lambert's side much-improved, coming off the back of a 3-2 defeat to Manchester United and the goalless draw with the Gunners, it will be no easy feat for McDermott's troops.
