The Baggies have had a flying start to the season, picking up 26 points out of a possible 39 and beating teams such as Liverpool, Chelsea and Everton.
They now find themselves only behind Manchester City and Manchester United on the league table.
Clarke led Albion to their fourth successive victory over the weekend, a 4-2 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
The Scot believes that luck has nothing to do with his team's league position, but is not getting carried away their good form just yet.
"It's certainly not been a lucky start," he told SkySports.
"We've earned every point we've got. You could even say we've been unlucky not to get more points in some games.
"It's been a solid start and we've deserved everything we've got.
"We're third and we deserve to be there. But we won't get carried away. We don't think that, because we're up there, we're big-time Charlies.
"We'll stay grounded and just keep working. But as I've said to the players, it could be a good season for us."
