A match between last season's Champions League winners and Premier League champions should have been an eventful affair, but in fact the two sides cancelled each other at a wet Stamford Bridge in a drab game that saw virtually no clear-cut chances.
The first 45 minutes were particularly dire, although City did at least create one goalscoring opportunity when David Silva headed Pablo Zabaleta's 22nd-minute cross over Petr Cech's goal.
However, Chelsea were barely able to string two passes together and Joe Hart was a spectator for virtually the entire match.
The second half was marginally better although the quality of play still left a lot to be desired. Chelsea midfielder Ramires saw an ambitious long-range drive sail over Hart's goal while Fernando Torres, who endured yet another abject afternoon, was also off-target with his piledriver on the hour mark.
In stoppage time, Matija Nastasic had a half-chance to grab a winner for City when he got his head to a corner, but the ball was directed straight at a grateful Cech.
In truth neither side deserved to take three points from a sterile match which leaves City second in the table and Chelsea fourth.
