Wenger: Only takes a point

Arsenal were unable to find a way past Aston Villa as Saturday's late Premier League kick-off at Villa Park finished goalless.

The Gunners would have to settle for just a point, which left the side sixth in the standings, four points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, who have a game in hand.

Villa, meanwhile, go just one point above the relegation zone after managing just 10 points from their opening 13 league matches.

In a monotonous first-half in the pouring rain, Arsenal came closest to opening the scoring when Laurent Koscielny scooped over Olivier Giroud's low cross in the goalmouth.

Aaron Ramsey saw an earlier shot well saved by Brad Guzan while Andreas Weimann had a goal correctly ruled out for offside at the other end.

Both sets of supporters expected more after the interval and the result was a far more open game.

The first real opportunity fell to Ramsey who steered a corner wide at the far post before Gabriel Agbonlahor fired straight at Wojciech Szczesny from inside the box.

Substitute Brett Holman then went inches away from putting Villa ahead on 78 minutes when his long range drive was tipped onto the crossbar by Szczesny.

Neither side managed to come closer in the closing stages although Gervinho may have turned in Andrey Arshavin's cross from six-yards but for some fine last-ditch defending from Ciaran Clark.
