After a nervous and scrappy ten minutes, the game suddenly sprang into life with both teams taking it in turns to attack one another in an open match.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 35th minute, when defender Sean Morrison powered a header home from a Nicky Shorey free-kick to put the visitors ahead.

Wigan equalised after 58 minutes, when Gomez had a shot that Federici could only parry back into his path to slot home, before he got his second of the game with a diving header from a brilliant cross in from Jean Beausejour.

The game continued to be open, but Reading equalised in extraordinary fashion, as a looping shot was fumbled by Al-Habsi onto his own face and over the line for an own goal.

However, Wigan and Gomez weren't to be denied and three minutes into added time he got his hat-trick, firing home after Kone set him up with the opportunity, as the home side ended a run of three successive defeats.
