Everton started the game strongly and Leon Osman curled wide on two minutes before they took an early lead with 12 minutes on the clock.

Nice work between Thomas Hitzlsperger and Bryan Oviedo saw the ball played back to Steven Naismith and the Scottish forward made no mistake, side-footing home from inside the area.

Leighton Baines almost got a second on 15 minutes after his shot was parried by John Ruddy and Osman could only put the rebound over the bar.

At the other end, Grant Holt wasted a good chance when he fired over from the edge of the box and Sebastian Bassong directed a header wide.

The visitors were much improved after the interval and Anthony Pilkington tested Tim Howard with a free-kick on 57 minutes before the Toffees keeper had to be be on his toes to stop Holt minutes later.

John Heitinga then cleared off the line after Robert Snodgrass had beaten Howard before Baines was once again was denied by a Ruddy after an incredible run.

Then Baines was adjudged to have fouled Steve Morison 30 yards out much to Moyes's fury. In truth, the Scotsman has a point as the foul was a very soft one.

The resulting free-kick, delivered by Pilkington, was met by a towering Bassong at the far-post with Tim Howard unable to keep it out, despite his valiant efforts.
