A surprise 1-0 defeat for Sir Alex Ferguson's side at Norwich last weekend allowed rivals Manchester City to go top of the standings.

But trailing City by just one point, and with the defending champions only in action at Chelsea on Sunday, the Red Devils can capitalise on the 24-hour advantage.

Working in their favour is the recent sacking of former United striker Mark Hughes by the Hoops.

The Welshman was shown the door at Loftus Road on Friday after he failed to pick up a single win in the first 12 games of the season.

In team news, United will be boosted the return of Wayne Rooney after the striker was passed fit following a bout of tonsillitis.

Chris Smalling is also available having shrugged off a shoulder problem.

Fellow defender Jonny Evans's return to training is good news for the future, but the weekend's clash with QPR comes too soon for the Northern Irishman.

Meanwhile, QPR skipper Park Ji-Sung remains a doubt to face his former employers due to an ongoing knee issue, but Stephane Mbia is back after serving a three-match ban.

Strikers Bobby Zamora (hip) and Andrew Johnson (knee) miss out, along with full-back Fabio, who cannot feature against his parent club.
