While in charge of Liverpool, Benitez kept Mourinho's Chelsea from reaching the Champions League final on two separate occasions in 2005 and 2007.
Benitez collected several accolades during his time on Merseyside and led the Reds to two Champions League finals, winning Liverpool's fifth European title in 2005.
Mourinho has denied any contempt for the Spaniard because of their rivalry and offered him and the Blues his full support.
He said: "I like my old clubs to win, so I always wish good to the managers of my former clubs. So I wish good luck to Benitez."
The Special One was also quizzed on the situation at Chelsea, where they now welcome their ninth manager in as many years.
"I'm never happy when a manager is sacked - never, because it happens to them and it can happen to me," Mourinho added.
"I'm never happy and I never enjoy it for him. I always feel sorry for him and his family because our lives are very, very similar."
