Watson: Brave man

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has received good news on Ben Watson after scans showed his broken leg does not require surgery.

The 27-year-old midfielder sustained the nasty injury in a freak collision with Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling during the first half of the Latics' 3-0 defeat at Anfield on Saturday.

Watson did, however, manage to leave the pitch without the aid of a stretcher, although there were still fears he could be ruled out for much of the season.

That will not be the case, though, as his leg break is not as bad as first thought, with Martinez hoping the former Crystal Palace man can make a swifter recovery than expected.

"It's not as bad as it could have been, that's for certain," the Spanish tactician told his club's official website.

"It's still a very serious injury and we need to ensure that Ben is given all the time that he needs to make a full recovery.

"The good news is that he won't be out for as long as we initially thought and with the character that Ben has, he will be able to deal with such an injury.

"Ben has just started put his stamp on the team and he will be missed in the group because of the type of lad he is."
