Arsenal forward Theo Walcott believes the 5-2 North London derby win over Tottenham is just the lift the Gunners need to turn around their fortunes.

The 23-year-old speed merchant was an influential figure all afternoon, setting up Per Mertesacker's equalizer before completing the rout with a goal of his own in injury time.

All this after Emmanuel Adebayor turned from hero to villain, getting sent-off for a brainless tackle shortly after giving Spurs the lead.

And Walcott feels the Gunners finally played to their potential and with a number of important players returning from injury, he is backing them to hit a good run of form following their inconsistent start to the season.

"We showed people how good we are today,"the England international told Sky Sports 2.

"It'll give us tremendous spirit, and we've got a lot of players back to fitness and everybody's very confident.

"I've just wanted to play and hopefully I'm showing people what I can do now."

Walcott also took time to praise Olivier Giroud, who scored his fifth goal in as many games.

"Olivier's come in and people were saying things at the start but he just needed time."

Giroud, who was playing against Spurs for the first time, said: "It was an amazing atmosphere and I'm very happy to win my first derby.

"It is something special for our fans so I am proud. It was important for the future to win this game."
