Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas felt Manchester City had done very well to contain his players following their 2-1 defeat on Sunday.

Spurs took a 1-0 lead into the break at the Etihad Stadium thanks to Stephen Caulker's opener, but the Citizens hit back in the second-half with goals from Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko.

"The plan before the game was to try and hold on to the ball a bit more, to have possession and try to connect up and link the wingers," he told Sky Sports.

"It was difficult because Manchester City's line was very high and they pushed us very well, so it was difficult to make that second pass in the link up play.

One of Villas-Boas' stand-out selections in the starting XI saw Emmanuel Adebayor brought in ahead of high flying Jermain Defoe, who struck a hat-trick in the Europa League last week.

The Togo international was unable to find the back of the net, but the Portuguese tactician still felt the forward did well to bridge the midfield and attack, despite the fruitless harvest.

Villas-Boas added: "In the end, he (Adebayor) had a positive impact regarding the structure we put together. It's a pity we didn't get a result in the end."
