Having only returned to action from cruciate surgery at the start of the season, Vidic was once again sidelined due as an injury recurrence.
The 31-year-old's absence left United short of quality defenders with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones also on the casualty list.
But Smalling has since made his first appearance of the 2012/13 campaign in midweek, and Ferguson reckons Vidic may also be back on the park soon.
"I think it's Christmas time for Vidic," said Ferguson.
"If we get him back for Christmas, then I'll be happy.
There's been no setback but we cannot take any chances after his cruciate."
The Red Devils travel to Aston Villa on Saturday evening looking to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table.
