The Blues relinquished top-spot to Manchester United last weekend following the former's draw to Swansea and the latter's victory over Arsenal.

Roberto Di Matteo's men now sit one point behind the Red Devils, who take on strugglers Aston Villa 24 hours earlier, leaving a win for the west Londoners this weekend of paramount importance to their title bid.

The Reds, meanwhile, have endured a horror start to the season, with the Merseysiders currently 12th in the standings after earning just 11 points from their opening 10 league games.

Brendan Rodgers' men were also pegged back to a 1-0 defeat to Anzhi Makhachkala in the Europa League on Thursday, while they have not recorded a win in any competition since their 1-0 triumph over Reading in the league midway through October.

On the team front, Blues captain John Terry is set to return after completing his four-match ban for racially abusing Anton Ferdinand.

Fernando Torres, meanwhile, is likely to come up against his former club for the fourth time since leaving in 2011, although the Spain international has yet to score against the team previously.

Ashley Cole could return after sitting out the European champions' 3-2 win over Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday with a hamstring strain.

For Liverpool, Glen Johnson could return after missing the last three matches through injury.

The likes of Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez, Daniel Agger, Joe Allen and Martin Skrtel should return after being rested in midweek.
