First-choice gloveman McCarthy suffered a shoulder injury when he collided with the post when attempting to save a Djibril Cisse effort in the 1-1 draw with QPR and will be out for a number of weeks.

This gives Federici the opportunity to reclaim the number-one shirt he used to possess before recently falling down the pecking order.

Manager Brian McDermott is without midfield duo Jem Karacan (knee) and Danny Guthrie (thigh) while Noel Hunt is back in contention having recovered from his calf problem.

Meanwhile, Norwich boss Chris Hughton will monitor Russell Martin's back injury ahead of the encounter.

Full-back Javier Garrido and centre-back Michael Turner are both back and expected to make the clash having shaken off a dead leg and knee problem respectively sustained in last Saturday's 1-0 home win over Stoke.

On-loan striker Harry Kane remains a long-term casualty for the Canaries and is expected to return before Christmas.

The Royals will be looking to claim their first victory of the season but their task will not be an easy one as Norwich have won three of their last four games and drawn one.
