The 6ft 8in striker showed tremendous skill to turn away from Sebastian Coates before deftly lobbing the ball over the onrushing Brad Jones in first half stoppage time.

In a game of precious few chances, the first real opportunity prior to that came after 35 minutes. Yuri Zhirkov stealing the ball from Andre Wisdom on the left before finding Samuel Eto'o, whose stinging drive was well kept out by Jones.

Traore had a great chance to double the advantage with 12 minutes left when he was played clean through, but the Ivory Coast striker drilled the ball wide when it seemed easier to score.

A much changed Liverpool side were easy on the eye once more, sticking to boss Brendan Rodgers' philosophy, but they struggled to create anything of note.

Their best opportunity came after 76 minutes when substitute Suso's shot from distance was fumbled by Vladimir Gabulov, but Joe Cole could only fire the rebound straight at the Anzhi goalkeeper.
