McCarthy sustained the injury during Sunday's 1-1 draw with QPR when he collided with the goalpost as he attempted to save a Djibril Cisse effort.

The 22-year-old gloveman has overtaken Australia international Adam Federici in the pecking order at the Royals.

However, McDermott has confirmed that the injury will result in his number one being sidelined.

"Alex has seen a consultant. He has a shoulder joint problem and will be out for a little while," said McDermott.

The Berkshire outfit also have Jem Karacan and Danny Guthrie unavailable for Saturday's Premier League encounter with high-flying Norwich.
