It was the home side who came out of the traps the fastest, with striker Suarez causing plenty of problems for the Newcastle defence before placing a curling free-kick just wide of the target on the 20th minute.

The Magpies started to settle into the game but never really tested goalkeeper Brad Jones, until they broke the deadlock on the 43rd minute.

Hatem Ben Arfa made a fine run down the right wing before chipping the ball all the way to the back post, where Cabaye was there to fire the ball into the back of the net just before the break.

Liverpool again started brightly in the second-half and they got themselves level when a hopeful long ball from Jose Enrique was played up to Suarez, before the Uruguayan brought it down superbly and took it past Tim Krul to level the score.

The Reds should have taken the lead three minutes later when Suarez pulled the ball back for Jonjo Shelvey, who scuffed the ball at Krul when it would have been easier to score.

There was drama in the dying minutes as Fabricio Coloccini produced a late tackle on Suarez and was shown a straight red in the 84th minute. However, Liverpool could not make the one man advantage count and both teams had to settle for a point apiece.
