The Black Cats have won only once in their last 17 league games, and also suffered a midweek Capital One Cup loss to local rivals Middlesbrough.

And O'Neill conceded: "Yes, it's difficult, it's been a difficult week for us, obviously, losing against Middlesbrough and then not scoring here.

"It's been a difficult week, but we will come through. We threw just about everything at them to try to get on the score-sheet, but it eluded us today again. But it will turn."

O'Neill, meanwhile, received support from Villa counterpart Paul Lambert, who said: "It's a tough, tough job, it really is a tough job. But if there's one person who will turn it around, it will be him.

"I have got the utmost respect for the Gaffer. I am not in a position to sit here and say I have got one over him or anything."
