The Gunners slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford, with Robin van Persie and Patrice Evra rendering Santi Cazorla's injury-time goal inconsequential.

However, the visitors had to play the final 21 minutes with only 10 men as Wilshere picked up a second yellow card for a challenge on Evra, although Wenger didn't feel the tackle was deserving of a booking.

Asked whether the tackle was worth a card, Wenger told Sky Sports 2HD: "Not deserved. No, he went for the ball.

"I will have to see it again but it didn't look to me at all that he went on purpose over the ball."

Looking back on the encounter, which saw numerous errors from the London club, Wenger added: "We put ourselves in trouble because most of the problems we had were on our own mistakes when we had the ball and lost the ball, especially the first goal which is important in a game like that.

"It came very, very early and of course when you put Man United in a position where they just have to defend and catch us on the counter attack and I think that is what happened."
