However, the visitors were left wondering how they did not take all three points from a match they dominated from virtually the first whistle.

The tone of the game was set in the opening minutes after Leon Osman and Steven Pienaar both saw their goal-bound efforts blocked.

However, it was the Cottagers who eventually took the lead in the seventh minute as Bryan Ruiz's free-kick hit the post before rebounding off the unfortunate Tim Howard and nestling in the back of the net.

The goal failed to knock David Moyes' side out of their stride though and they continued to create chances with Marouane Fellaini, Nikica Jelavic, Phil Jagielka and Osman all going close to equalising.

Fulham somehow led at the interval but the pattern of the match continued in the same vein throughout the second period as Everton dominated.

After Jagielka had again gone close, the outstanding Kevin Mirallas got to the by-line in the 55th minute and pulled the ball back for Fellaini to fire home from 15 yards out.

Belgian international Fellaini finally put Everton in front with 18 minutes left when he slid a shot past Mark Schwarzer, and he almost completed his hat-trick moments later when another effort hit the post, while Steven Naismith was unable to turn home the rebound.

Schwarzer kept Fulham in it by making two more good stops to deny Fellaini and Naismith, and with just moments left in the game to hosts snatched the leveller, Sidwell beating Seamus Coleman at the far post in stoppage time to put the ball home and earn his side a valuable point.
