The Dutchman was involved in a collision with Metalist Kharkiv striker Jonathan Cristaldo that saw him forced to make use of crutches after the clash.

"His ankle is still a little bit swollen. We think [he will be out for a] maximum four weeks, five weeks, but we are hoping for less than that," manager Alan Pardew said on Thursday.

Krul was replaced by Rob Elliot for the Magpies' Premier League match against Southampton over the weekend and with Steve Harper also on the treatment table, Elliot now looks set for an extended run in the first XI.
