The Gunners were eliminated from the FA Cup last Saturday by Championship side Blackburn, before being humbled at the Emirates by Bayern Munich in the Champions League a few days later.

With pressure having mounted on Wenger following those results, Saturday's home win over Villa has given the Frenchman fresh cause for optimism, claiming his team can now focus on climbing the league table.

"I'm not sure it will only be a fight with Tottenham anymore," he said after the game. "I'm not sure the other places are not reachable.

"Chelsea are just ahead and even Man City is not out of reach. It could be a tight fight until the end.

"But I hope this gives us a bit more quietness for us to prepare our next game. It was a very important day for Arsenal Football Club."

The Gunners' longest-serving manager is also hoping the victory will help his players' press on from past disappointments, with their focus returning purely to football.

"I am very happy for the players because they have a good attitude and want to do well," Wenger added. "We went through some difficult times so it was important first to show that we are united, determined and focused to win the game, and we were.

"We were a bit nervous - I concede that - because we are a lot under pressure, we had our backs to the wall and had to win the game. What is important now is that we can focus again on football."
