The Red Devils looked dangerous from the start and took the lead in the 24th minute. Robin van Persie forced Julio Cesar to parry the ball away and it fell to Rafael da Silva, who volleyed superbly into the top right-hand corner from outside the box.

Van Persie was injured following the goal after colliding with the advertising boards and was substituted a few minutes before the break with Sir Alex Ferguson taking no chances ahead of the Champions League clash with Real Madrid, opting to send on Danny Welbeck.

QPR were rattled and were restricted to a few long-range efforts which did not trouble David de Gea, while United came close to getting a second when Nemanja Vidic rose to meet Ryan Giggs' cross but headed just over the bar.

The home side pressed for an equaliser after the break but the impressive Vidic and Rio Ferdinand stood firm. Loic Remy forced a save from De Gea after coming on for Bobby Zamora but chances were few and far between.

United got their second with 10 minutes to go, Ryan Giggs finding the back of the net with a fine left-foot strike from a tight angle.

They could have had more but Giggs hit the bar while substitute Wayne Rooney also came close.

QPR remain rooted to the bottom of the table with 17 points, while the pressure mounts on Manchester City in second ahead of their clash with Chelsea on Sunday.
