Fulham were the better team in the first half, Berbatov volleyed over from Bryan Ruiz's cross while Giorgios Karagounis' curling free-kick was tipped over by Asmir Begovic.

Ruiz put the ball in the back of the goal but used his hand, a misdemeanour which saw him booked.

Fulham got the goal they deserved in first-half stoppage time. The impressive Sascha Riether's cross was half-cleared and Berbatov took advantage to hit a stunning volley into the corner of the net.

Stoke produced little in front of goal before the break, going closest when Glenn Whelan fired over.

Both sides enjoyed chances in the second half. Mark Schwarzer made a great save from Peter Crouch after the big striker had got the better of Philippe Senderos.

The Cottagers goalkeeper was called into action again to keep out Jon Walters' penalty, the spot-kick being awarded for Ashkan Dejagas' handball.

At the other end, Berbatov showed sublime skill to beat two defenders with audacious flicks before hitting a volley that was saved by Begovic.

That was before Jon Arne Riise hit one with the outside of his foot that flew just over.
