Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez: Down and out

A 3-1 win wasn't enough for Liverpool as they were eliminated from the Europa League on away goals by Zenit St Petersburg.

After Zenit won 2-0 in last week's first-leg, both teams set out with plenty of attacking intent and it was the visitors who took the lead when Hulk latched onto Jamie Carragher's scuffed back-pass to run through and coolly finish past Pepe Reina on 19 minutes.

The goal seemed to spark the Reds into life and it didn't take them long to find an equaliser, as after Daniel Agger's great run forward, Luis Suarez struck through the wall from the resulting free-kick to levels things up.

Brendan Rodgers' men continued to push forward and deservedly went ahead when Jose Enrique linked-up well with Jordan Henderson down the left before crossing for Joe Allen, who forced a great save from Vyacheslav Malafeev but recovered well to fire home and send his side 2-1 up at the interval.

The game continued to be stretched after the break with the teams giving everything in both defence and attack.

It was Liverpool who made the breakthrough though, as Suarez again fired home from another free-kick, curling a truly sumptuous effort into the top corner and giving Malafeev no chance just before the hour mark.

However, with Zenit having grabbed the away goal, the Reds knew they needed one more but couldn't break the Russians' resolve and the visitors held onto win the tie 3-3 on away goals.
