Andre Villas-Boas' side appeared to be heading for defeat until the 25-year-old Belgian let fly with a low 20-yard drive that was too good for Lyon goalkeeper Remy Vercoutre.

But it was tough to take for the French side who also conceded a stoppage-time goal in the first leg at White Hart Lane seven days ago, as they slumped to a 3-2 defeat on aggregate.

It had appeared as though Maxime Gonalons' 17th-minute near-post header was going to win the tie for Lyon as they controlled the match for long spells.

The visitors struggled to get going in the first half although, just before the interval, Lewis Holtby's shot was turned onto a post by Vercoutre. The match opened up after the break and Gareth Bale should have scored in the 50th minute.

A superb counter-attack by Spurs ended with the Welshman side-footing the ball inches wide from Emmanuel Adebayor's pinpoint cross.

Veteran American goalkeeper Brad Friedel had to make a good save with his legs to keep out the impressive Clement Grenier's left-footed strike while, at the other end, Adebayor's lofted cross landed on the top of the crossbar.

However, it seemed as though Spurs had run out of ideas until, with the referee about to signal three minutes of stoppage time, Dembele fired home to send the visiting fans wild.
