Benitez, currently interim manager at Chelsea, has been linked with the La Roja hot-seat in recent weeks, and the Spaniard admits he would indeed be interested in the role.

"I don't rule out becoming the Spain coach, if and when Vicente decides to leave," he said.

"It's something I would envision for further down the line, although to achieve that I have to continue in elite football and keep on doing well."

One member of the Spanish side that would surely welcome Benitez's appointment as manager is Blues striker Fernando Torres, who has recently found himself on the fringes of the World Cup and European Championships-winning squad, but who has the full-backing of the former Liverpool boss.

"I think Fernando will return to the squad," said Benitez, who brought Torres to Anfield from Atletico Madrid in 2007.

"The decision is completely down to Vicente, of course, but I see the work Fernando does and I think he's coming back."
