The former Latics and Tottenham Hotspur defender has been without a club since leaving Doncaster Rovers at the start of the current English League One campaign.

However, Fire officials are set to make a decision on the 33-year-old next week, with the defender hoping to formally join the club ahead of the start of the new season.

Chimbonda recently spoke of his desire to play in the MLS last month, stating: "I would like to play in the USA, this is a dream. I feel close to this culture and I appreciate it.

"I know some clubs are looking for good defenders. I'm 33 and a right side, you are far from being cooked at this age," he added.

Chicago Fire will kick off their MLS campaign on March 2 with a tricky away fixture against reigning MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy at the Home Depot Centre.
