The announcement is certain to be met with objection from the Welsh club's fans, who hope to see their team compete in Europe for the first time since 1991.

"If Swansea win the English domestic cup, they will qualify for UEFA Europa League," A spokesman for European football's governing body told reporters.

"It would then be for the FA to decide whether they allow Swansea City to take a UEFA Europa League position instead of an English club.

"If the FA accept to give their position to Swansea City, they will have an English flag next to their name."

The FA have confirmed that the Swans will be permitted to enter the competition should they win their first major trophy in their 101-year history.

An FA spokesman has confirmed: "Swansea would qualify for Europe as representatives of the English FA, as they would have won an English domestic cup competition."
