Cisse: Frustrating night

In a game with numerous chances neither Newcastle nor Metalist Kharkiv could find the back of the net at St James' Park in their Europa League first leg tie.

There were chances for the Magpies in the first-half with Gabriel Obertan having the first meaningful shot at goal, which just went wide of the target after 18 minutes.

Striker Papiss Cisse put the ball in the back of the net with a simple tap in on the 24th minute but a late flag went up for offside, in what was a borderline decision.

Metalist had chances of their own and Tim Krul was forced into making a good save, after Cleiton Ribeiro Xavier was given space for a free header in the box.

Having gone in goalless at the break Metalist should have broken the deadlock on the 50th minute when Jonathan Cristaldo had a great opportunity to hit the back of the net but from a decent position, he missed the target.

On the 74th minute, for the second time in the game, Cisse had the ball in the back of the net but again the flag went up for offside in another marginal decision.

The Magpies forward could have won the game at the death but an injury-time header was well saved by Oleksandr Goryainov to leave both sides without a goal come the full-time whistle.
