The first half opened with the game flowing from end to end. Chelsea should have had the lead early on when Fernando Torres missed an opportunity from inside the area, placing his shot into the arms of Tomas Vaclik in the Sparta goal.

Not long after, the Spanish International was gifted with another chance to open the scoring but again failed to capitalise on the move created by his teammates.

Midway through the first half David Lafata received the ball from the right hand side but he steered his first time effort over the bar, despite been clear of the two Chelsea centre backs.

The second half saw a much quieter opening with both sides making passing errors in the middle of the park. There were no real chances of note until Blues manager Rafa Benitez made a substitution that carved out the winning goal on 84 minutes.

Oscar replaced Juan Mata in the midfield and with his first touch played a neat one two with Eden Hazard before slotting the ball into the bottom left corner.

Chelsea held on to take the victory and a crucial away goal back to Stamford Bridge putting themselves in a great position to advance into the last 16 of the Europa League.
