The Baggies had not won in six previous Premier League games despite playing well, and Foster said it was about time they secured a result that matched their performances.

Gareth McAuley and Romelu Lukaku both found the target in the second-half of the 2-0 win, after Steven Gerrard had seen his 77th-minute penalty saved by Foster.

Steve Clarke's side leapfrogged the Reds in the standings as a result, moving into eighth place on 37 points ahead of the Merseysiders, who are currently on 36 points in ninth.

After the match, Foster told Sky Sports: "We needed that. We have been on a poor run but the performances have been decent.

"We knew we had a chance if we kept our performances up. We always knew set-pieces would be a big one for us and we managed to get one."

He added: "We have a tough game against Sunderland who themselves are on a decent run, we just have to take it a game at a time. We got off to a great start to the season and we are within touching distance of 40 points.

"If you had said at this stage of the season we would be above Liverpool, we would have taken that."

Albion beat the Reds 3-0 at the Hawthorns on the opening day of the season, making this their first double over the Anfield outfit since 1966/67.
