Ferguson was set to make several changes from the side that beat Fulham last weekend, but City's shock 3-1 defeat to the Saints on Saturday proved too good an opportunity for the Red Devils to pass up.
A full-strength United starting XI, save for the omissions of Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick, went on to earn a 2-0 win over the Toffees, opening up a significant 12-point gap at the top of the Premier League standings.
And when asked if Saturday's result played a part in his squad selection, Ferguson told Sky Sports: "Yeah it did. I thought I'd make about seven changes, but when I saw the result yesterday, I knew how important the game today would be for us and we can make more changes later on in the season."
The Scot continued: "We have to win our games anyway, it doesn't matter what happened with City yesterday. That's the way we should look at it, to concentrate on our own game and we will be okay."
