Bale: The Welsh Messi?

Tottenham Hotspur boss Andre Villas-Boas believes Gareth Bale leaving the club would be the same as Lionel Messi leaving Barcelona.

Bale was once again in top form, as he scored twice to give Spurs a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at White Hart Lane.

The Welshman, who took his haul to 19 goals for club and country this season, has been repeatedly linked with a move abroad over the last two seasons, but Villas-Boas insists that such a move would not be materialising any time soon.

"Obviously, we have spoken about that at length and are not going to go through it again," the 35-year old said. "Most teams have to hang on to their best players, Barcelona losing Messi would be a disaster, Real Madrid losing Ronaldo would be a disaster, so this is exactly the same.

"Teams are dependent on great organisation and also great individuals when they are able to express their football to the maximum."

While it is commonly believed that every player has a price that could not be refused, the Portuguese does not think the club would need to cash in on their most-prized asset.

"There isn't a release clause in English football, it's very difficult to negotiate with Tottenham as you know and we are not willing to let our best assets go. We can't turn this into a debate every time a player does well," he added.
