Defoe: Crocked

Tottenham have been dealt a major blow with the news that Jermain Defoe will be out of action for up to three weeks.

The 30-year-old missed England's 2-1 win over Brazil at Wembley on Wednesday after damaging his ankle in Spurs' 1-0 victory over West Brom last Sunday.

Defoe will now sit out upcoming fixtures against Newcastle on Saturday as well as the two-legged Europa League last-32 tie against Lyon.

And unless he makes a quicker than expected recovery, the striker is likely to be sidelined for the clash with West Ham on 25 February.

While Emmanuel Adebayor's return from the Africa Cup of Nations will go some way to compensate for the loss of Defoe, it does leave Andre Villas-Boas short of an in-form goalscorer - the Togolese frontman is only expected to link up with the squad on Friday.

Defoe leads the club's scoring charts this season with 14 goals in 32 appearances.

Other options in attack for Villas-Boas include Clint Dempsey, Jon Obika and Harry Kane.
