Samba joined the Hoops in January from Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala, signing a four-and-a-half-year deal reportedly worth £100,000 a week.

A seasoned campaigner in England, the Congolese defender spent five years in the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers before making the move to Russia at the end of last season, and Samba immediately felt a difference in intensity in his first game back.

"This is the English league and it is physical. It was a more intensive style of play than it was in Russia," the 28-year-old told the club's official website.

"I'd only done five days of training after five weeks out before coming here."

On the draw with Norwich at the weekend, Samba thought Harry Redknapp's defended well and probably deserved all three points which would have moved them to within four points of safety.

"To get a clean sheet is pleasing but I am very disappointed to get a draw as a win would have put us back amongst the chasing pack," he said.

"We had enough chances to win that game but we were a bit unlucky with the penalty.

"I thought we did enough to win and we were unfortunate not to as we could have had three points. That will come, hopefully against Swansea this Saturday.

"We played very well overall though and I have seen we have enough to remain in this league for myself now."
