The 21-year-old controlled the midfield with a display that belied his tender years in England's 2-1 victory over the Selecao at Wembley.

It was Wilshere's first start for the Three Lions since his return from a lengthy injury lay-off, and the proverbial duck-to-water analogy springs immediately to mind.

His drive and dynamism troubled the Samba Stars throughout the first half, with his ball to Theo Walcott indirectly leading to Wayne Rooney's opener.

His influence waned somewhat in the second half, but that is to be expected for someone who spent 17 months without kicking a ball in anger.

The Arsenal star says he is satisfied with his current performances for club and country, however, he admits he will have to continue to improve in order to establish himself ahead of the likes of Michael Carrick and Frank Lampard in the heart of the England midfield.

"I feel my form is getting better and better," he told Sky Sports. "I am never happy with where I am. I am always trying to improve. I work hard in training every day and I need to keep my performances up for my club and then hopefully I can get picked in the national team and I can do it there as well."

Wilshere then praised national captain Steven Gerrard's influence, saying the Liverpool legend made his job easy, while also commending Tom Cleverley's role in providing a balance in midfield.

He said: "Stevie talks to me the whole game. He's telling me left, right. He was playing in the holding role but you can't keep Stevie in the holding role.

"I think it is good for us that he can go and I can cover, and Cleverley can come in as well. We have got a good mix in there."
