Bale is a constant attacking threat from his usual position out wide or playing in a free role just behind the frontline, but with Defoe set for a spell on the sidelines, the Welshman could be set to start up front for Spurs.

Defoe's injury leaves Villas-Boas with Emmanuel Adebayor and Harry Kane as his only recognised strikers, and the Portuguese tactician believes Bale has all the attributes to succeed in the role.

"When we played pre-season, Gareth played alone in the striker role and it is something he feels comfortable with," Villas-Boas told ESPN. "He gives us even that possibility for sure. It is something we have to look to. You just have to adapt to it in the best way you can."

The 35-year-old went on to discuss the club's failure to bring in reinforcements in the January transfer window, and refused to blame their inactivity for their current predicament.

"It was always a risk not to buy a striker in the transfer window, but this is the risk we decided to take," Villas Boas said. "We have many attacking options in our team and you could see we created a lot of chances during the game.

"We don't have control over injuries. They happen when you least expect them to and I still feel we are safe with the options we have."
