The result leaves City nine points behind table-topping Manchester United with 13 games of the season remaining, but in truth they were lucky to escape with a draw as the visitors were the better team for long spells.

The champions started well though and, in the second minute, Pepe Reina was forced to tip David Silva's left-footed shot over the bar.

When the Reds responded, Daniel Sturridge, playing against his former club, latched onto Glen Johnson's lofted ball forward and rounded Joe Hart only to see Pablo Zabaleta get back to clear the ball away.

In the 23rd minute, against the run of play, City took the lead when Edin Dzeko had the simple task of knocking James Milner's cross into the back of the net from a couple of yards out.

However, just six minutes later, Sturridge equalised with a powerful left-footed strike, before a mix-up between Zabaleta and Hart almost ended up with the Argentine defender prodding the ball into his own net, only for it to eventually dribble agonisingly wide.

The Merseysiders edged the second half and, with 17 minutes left, the ball found its way to Steven Gerrard on the edge of the penalty and the Reds captain rifled a superb shot into the corner of the net.

However, just five minutes later, when Reina raced out of his goal, Aguero got to the ball first and somehow netted from an incredibly tight angle.

As both teams pressed for a late winner, Hart ensured the match ended all-square with an outstanding stop to deny the impressive Sturridge.
