Albion looked a match for the visitors in the first half but the game was completely transformed when Goran Popov was dismissed just after the break.

Spurs then took control, and Bale fired home the game's only goal midway through the second half.

Twenty-one minutes in Shane Long had the first good chance of the game when he was found by Graham Dorrans, but the Irishman was denied from a narrow angle by Hugo Lloris.

Ben Forster wasn't tested until the stroke of half-time when he had to adjust his feet well to turn Bale's curling effort over the crossbar.

Popov's dismissal came out of nothing just two minutes after the restart. Kyle Walker tussled with the Baggies full-back, words were then exchanged before Popov spat at his opponent.

Referee Mark Clattenburg saw it all, and had no hesitation in showing the red card. Steve Clarke's men eventually succumbed on 67 minutes when Bale stepped inside Morrison before thumping his shot into the corner from 20 yards.

That goal proved to be the winner, as Andre-Villas Boas's side move to within one point of Chelsea in third place. For West Brom, it's another defeat as their slide in form continues.
