Magpies boss Alan Pardew named the same starting XI that secured a 2-1 victory at Aston Villa last time out, while Petr Cech, John Terry and former Magpies striker Demba Ba returned to the Blues line-up.

The first-half saw a number of chances for both sides, although neither keeper was extended before Ba was welcomed back to St James' Park for the first time since leaving last month with a crunching facial injury after colliding with Newcastle skipper Fabricio Coloccini.

Shortly afterwards the home side hit the front as Davide Santon drifted in a ball from the left and Jonas flicked a header into the far corner of the net.

Ten minutes into the second half Frank Lampard drew the Blues level as he smacked a dipping 25-yarder beyond the despairing dive of Tim Krul.

Six minutes later Chelsea were ahead as Fernando Torres teed the ball up for Juan Mata to curl a superb left-footed effort past Krul, who once more was left clutching at thin air.

However, the lead lasted only six further minutes as Yoan Gouffran broke the offside trap and, when Cech parried his shot, Sissoko was on hand to rifle the loose ball into the empty net.

Both sides continued to push on looking for a winner and in the final minute of normal time it was Sissoko who decided the outcome.

Santon made ground down the left and laid the ball back inside for Sissoko to drill a low right-foot shot past the right hand of the unsighted Cech.

The result left Chelsea third in the standings, and followed on from their disappointing 2-2 draw against Reading, while Newcastle climbed to 15th, six points above the relegation zone.
