The 18-year-old was ordered to appear before the Liverpool Youth Court on Friday to face a charge of common assault, but was not present as his representative and solicitor Mick Hogan spoke on his client's behalf.

A 27-year-old woman, reportedly known to Sterling, was said to have suffered "slight" facial injuries during an alleged incident in Toxteth, Liverpool, on November 2.

The Reds midfielder's lawyer, though, says his client has every intention of pleading not guilty when the case resumes at Liverpool Magistrates' Court later this month.

Mr Hogan said: "I do have instructions to the effect that Mr Sterling will be pleading not guilty to this charge.

"He is aware of today's hearing and the club are very supportive."
