The 26-year-old has had limited opportunities at St James' Park since joining from Deportivo La Coruna on a long-term deal in 2008 and the Tyneside club have terminated his contract with immediate effect after he failed to break into the first team.

Xisco had been loaned back to Spanish clubs twice while in the North-East, first to Racing Santander, then to former club Deportivo, and there had been some hope these loan spells would turn things around for the former Spanish Under-21 international.

However, having made his last first-team appearance in the 6-0 drubbing of Aston Villa way back in August 2010, the club have finally decided to cut their ties with the Spaniard.

Speaking at the time, he said: "Maybe there is a happy chapter still to come for me with Newcastle. In football, these things can happen - all I can do is try my best. We'll see after that what happens.

"Sometimes it has been hard here for me. When I came here I was happy to sign, I wanted to play for the first team. I haven't always had that chance."

Xisco has been linked with a move back to Spain and reports suggest he has signed an 18-month contract with Spanish Segunda side Cordoba for an undisclosed fee.
