Everton have announced the signing of John Stones from Barnsley for an undisclosed fee.

A deal with the Championship outfit was concluded on Thursday evening for the 18-year-old right-back who joins the club on a five-and-a-half year contract.

The England Under-19 international, who has made 28 appearances for the Tykes was delighted to have secured his move.

He told the club's official website: "I am very excited to be joining Everton. I've been very impressed with everything I have seen at Finch Farm already. Now the hard work begins."

He added on Sky Sports News: "I'm very happy.

"I was waiting for the call - it was Everton or Wigan. I decided Everton and I'm very pleased with it. It's a great club, with a great manager and I'm looking forward to it.

"I spoke with Wigan, they were very good to me, so thank you to them for the offer, they were very good.

"I've met David Moyes already, he's a nice man. It's such a good club, with the players here I feel I can learn for them. What a good place to be."

Meanwhile, Magaye Gueye has left Everton to join French club Stade Brest on loan until the end of the season.
